The People’s Protection Units (YPG) announced that 18 people were killed, including fighters and civilians, in the recent clashes with the Syrian regime forces and allied militias in the city of Hasakah, in northeastern Syria.

The Media Center of the YPG issued a statement (of which ARA News received a copy) saying: “During our resistance against fascism, four of our fighters, four civilians and eight members of the Assayish forces (security arm of the Democratic Union Party “PYD”) have joined the martyrs’ convoy.”

“On January 16, 2015, the Baath fascist forces (in reference to pro-Assad militias) attacked YPG and YPJ’s (Women Protection Units) bases and bombed the Kurdish neighborhoods of Hasakah with heavy weapons such as mortars and guns,” the statement said. “Our units repelled the offensive after clashes with forces of the (Assad) regime.”

How do parties explain the eruption of clashes at Hasakah? After a prolonged cease-fire with the YPG, suddenly Assad’s forces stepped up the brutality by killing many civilians in Hasakah, particularly by airdropped barrel bombs. Pro-Assad forces that made a deal with IS in northern Syria want to bring Hasakah under their joint control with IS, then move toward Qamishli and split the Kurdish Jazeera canton. To achieve that goal, the Assad regime was even using illegal cluster bombs, the YPG reported.

Assad forces alleged that the PYD cooperated with coalition forces and has long sold out the Assad regime. On the political front, the PYD has succeeded in having itself invited, despite opposition by Jabhat al-Nusra and the Damascus regime, to the Syrian Forces Conference planned to be held in Russia. In short, the PYD has betrayed Damascus by violating their agreement.

Derweil warnt ein Kommandeur der Free Syrian Army, dass Iran und Hizbollah ihre Präsenz an der israelischen Grenze verstärken und wirbt für eine engere Zusammenarbeit zwischen syrischer Opposition und Israel:

The rebel commander opined that the Shiite forces indeed intended to engage Israel more significantly than in the past, making Israeli cooperation with moderate opposition forces on the Syrian Golan more urgent than ever before.

“You have a historic opportunity to win the Syrian people, which has been disillusioned by the entire world,” he said, addressing the Israeli public. “We want to fight alongside you. The Shiites will not stop in Syria; they have a much larger project that endangers you as well as us.”

The Syrian commander also implored Israel to establish a system for transferring into Israel Syrian opposition fighters injured in battle.

“At the moment the entry of patients is sporadic and dependent on individuals. We want it to be public and established, so that the Syrian public knows that Israel is the only state that receives Syrian patients unconditionally.”
